About Julia Hughes

Julia Hughes is a Lowcountry painter working in oil and acrylic on canvas board, devoted to capturing the marshes, coastlines, and wide skies of South Carolina. Her paintings are quiet studies of light and atmosphere — the slow drift of tide over grass, the blush of a salt-marsh sunset, the cool hush of an overcast morning along the intracoastal waterway. Each piece is an invitation to pause and notice the subtle, everyday beauty of the coastal South.

Before settling in the Lowcountry, Julia spent a career as a naval officer, raising a family and wedging painting time between deployments and duty stations. Retirement gave her the gifts of time and endless inspiration, and she now paints full time from her home studio. She works in both acrylic and water-mixable oils, drawn always to color — the sage and pewter of winter marsh grass, the peach and shell of a low country evening, the deep teal of a rising tide.

Julia paints larger works for statement walls as well as smaller pieces suited to a hallway, bookshelf, powder room, or pantry. She believes art should be enjoyed everywhere, and that a painting is finished only when it brings a measure of joy and contentment to the room it lives in. Her work hangs in private collections along the southeastern coast, and she accepts a limited number of commissions each year for clients who want a particular view, light, or memory of the Lowcountry made on canvas.

When she paints, Julia feels joyful and content, and for a time her worries melt away. It is her heartfelt desire that her paintings bring that same quiet gladness to others — a small window onto the marsh, kept on the wall long after the tide has turned.
